Comment by May 31 on the latest permit to harm bobolink in Ontario

The bobolink (bird) is protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which makes it illegal “to kill, harm and harass… as well as damage and destroy the habitat” of threatened species.  To legalize the killing of 2 other species, the Government of Ontario granted this exemption for the Ostrander Point project in eastern Ontario. Now they are granting a similar exemption for the Bluewater project, although they no longer use the words kill, harm, harass, damage, destroy.

The wind company “is seeking a permit under clause 17(2)(c) of the Endangered Species Act, 2007 (ESA) to authorize an activity that would otherwise contravene section 10 of the ESA with respect to Bobolink in order to construct a wind farm near the community of Bayfield, Ontario”.
